Things to Pack When Moving into a Care Home

Moving into a care home is often a big change for the person in question and like many other new experiences, can be a little bit daunting as you venture into the unknown. However, through guaranteeing that you take everything you need or want when you move in, you can be sure that you feel more prepared for the when the time comes.

Here, we share some essential things to consider packing when moving into a care home to help you feel more prepared.

Clothing

Don’t worry about packing every item of clothing when moving into a care home, as you can bring more items over time. Comfortable clothes for wearing during the day are a must, plus underwear and socks. Nightclothes are also essential, as are a dressing gown and slippers for staying cosy before and after bedtime. When it comes to shoes, packing comfy options that you feel safe walking around in are advisable. Jewellery is something else to consider, so don’t forget your favourite watch, ring, or any other sentimental items.

Decorative and personal items

Make your new room your own by adding decorative items that will make you feel happy and at home. This could include photos of friends and family, pictures drawn by grandchildren, and anything else that will bring some character into your personal space.

Entertainment

Packing items that will keep you busy will ensure that you always have something fun to do, although your new home will also have a packed schedule of fun activities for you to enjoy so this is not essential. You may like to bring your favourite books and magazines, a pack of cards, or your favourite music and something to play it on. You might also like to take anything that will help you to continue any hobbies that you have, such as knitting, crossword puzzles, or materials to craft with.

Toiletries

You may wish to bring your own toiletries such as bathing products, your favourite grooming accessories and other items to make your bathroom feel like home. When living in your new care home, you will always be able to top up your supplies by asking a member of your care team or taking the opportunity to go shopping yourself if you wish, so don’t worry too much if you haven’t got all your favourite essentials at the time of moving.

Speak to your new care home

If you are unsure about what to take with you, how many personal items you will have space for or what kind of facilities will be available at your new home, you can always speak to the staff at your new home who can help you create a check list and provide reassurance about what to bring and what will be there when you arrive.
