Sleeping Tips for People with Dementia
Getting a good night’s sleep is very important for people of all ages, but those with dementia can find it a little more difficult to nod off when it comes to bedtime. Here, we share our sleeping tips for people with dementia which you can share with your loved one.
Get outside during the day
People with dementia can get day and night mixed up, which can have a negative impact on their body clocks. By getting outside during the day and enjoying the daylight hours, particularly in the morning and early evening, those living with dementia can help to get their body clock back on track, which will help them to feel ready for bed when night draws in. Getting some fresh air comes with multiple benefits, so this is something that all older people should aim to do every day, regardless of whether they live with dementia or not.
Avoid caffeinated drinks
Just like everyone else, drinking too many caffeinated drinks or having them too late in the day can negatively impact a dementia patient’s sleep. Drinks containing caffeine, such as tea and coffee, should be consumed no later than mid afternoon, as drinking them after this time could make it more difficult to drop off at bedtime. Suggest change to de-caffeinated or alternative drinks, such as herbal teas, fruit squashes, cranberry, cold milk or a simple glass of cold water to encourage your loved one to consume less caffeine during the day.
Limit evening drinks
Limiting the number of drinks consumed in the evening could also help those with dementia to sleep, as they will require fewer toilet trips in the night. This needs to be carefully balanced with the importance of keeping hydrated as loved ones with dementia can forget to drink during the day. If your loved one is drink well during the day then reducing liquids consumed in the evening can really make the difference when it comes to getting a good night’s sleep.
