What Does A Job In Domiciliary Care Involve?
If you’re looking for a rewarding, varied career where you can genuinely make a difference to people’s lives, domiciliary care might well be for you. But what else can you expect from a job in domiciliary care?
As a community care team member, you’ll be assisting vulnerable and older people with various aspects of day-to-day life, within their own home. Every person is unique and will benefit from different levels of care and companionship, meaning no day is the same as the last, and you can enjoy great variety within the role.
What doesn’t change though, is the huge impact you can have on a person’s independence and quality of life, through domiciliary care.
Here are just some of the things you can expect from a role in domiciliary care:
Personal care and medication
Domiciliary roles usually involve helping clients with personal care, such as washing, dressing and enjoying their meals. You’ll be trained in how to safely administer medication, or you may simply make sure that a client stays up to date with taking medication.
Household tasks
Basic household jobs are usually part of a community carer’s role; these might include simple cleaning, keeping the garden tidy, cooking and preparing meals, feeding pets and doing laundry.
Admin and errands
You might accompany your client to appointments, or help with running errands, such as shopping, walking the dog or popping to the post office.
A vulnerable or older person may also require help with admin tasks, too, whether that’s ensuring bills are paid on time, making shopping lists or booking appointments.
Support and companionship
One of the most important and rewarding parts of the job is simply being there for another person. Through your support and companionship, you will improve not just your client’s life, but that of their family and friends, who can rest easy in the knowledge that their loved one is in trusted hands.
