Top Tips on Clothes Shopping for an Older or Vulnerable Relative

Shopping for clothes for a vulnerable or elderly relative can be a challenge. There’s a lot of factors to consider: where they’ll be wearing their clothes, their personal taste, mobility restrictions and overall comfort are just a few. Here are some top tips to help you kit out your loved one with suitable, comfortable clothes.

Choose clothes with easy fastenings

Small buttons and zips can be difficult for older people to fasten themselves, especially for those with arthritis. Opt for clothes with easy fastenings – or ideally no fastenings at all, like pull-on trousers and pullover tops.

Look for comfortable materials

Comfort is key for elderly and vulnerable people. Look for soft, comfortable materials that are suitable for machine washing, such as cotton. Loose fitting clothes allow for easy movement, especially if your relative has had an operation or other injury. Soft materials are kind to sensitive or dry skin which many people experience as they get older.

Layers to regulate temperature

When looking for clothes for vulnerable loved ones, make sure they have plenty of layers to add or remove as necessary. On hot summer days, thin, loose-fitting clothes will be the most comfortable. On cold winter days, make sure your loved one has thicker tops and jumpers with long sleeves. These should be easy to remove if your relative gets too hot.

Loose clothes for easy mobility

If mobility is a struggle for your relative, make sure their clothing doesn’t hinder them further. Loose clothing allows your loved one to move freely without tight clothing restricting them. If your relative likes wearing skirts, these can be more comfortable than trousers.

Comfortable footwear

When shopping for shoes, look for ones with thick, non-slip soles to reduce the risk of falls. Slip-on and Velcro strap shoes are easier to put on than shoes with laces, both for the individual and their carer.
