"Time to Get Your Flu Jab" for Health and Social Care

It’s that time of year again where the dreaded flu virus is making its way across the population. In order to prevent this horrid illness from spreading, it is important that you are vaccinated against flu, especially if you are more vulnerable and susceptible to catching it, as it can be life threatening.

We encourage all our staff to become vaccinated against the flu virus in order to also help protect our elderly and more vulnerable residents and clients in the community. Public Health England has just launched their 2019/20 campaign to encourage people to get their flu jab, before it’s too late.

There is an emphasis on how important it is for health and care staff that work with vulnerable people, to get their jabs too and help to shield from and prevent flu, rather than treat it, as the symptoms can be nasty and for those with impaired immunity, it can be fatal.

“Help protect yourself, your family and the people you support. Get your free flu jab” is the message circulating in the current campaign and we agree.

Do I have to pay for a flu vaccination?

Flu vaccinations are absolutely free, and you can easily book an appointment at your local Doctor’s surgery to get yours as soon as possible.

What are the symptoms of Flu?

Flu, also known as Influenza, is different to a common cold. It can be much more serious and has a larger impact on your ability to continue everyday tasks. According to the NHS website, flu symptoms come on very quickly and can include:

  • a sudden fever – a temperature of 38C or above
  • an aching body
  • feeling tired or exhausted
  • a dry cough
  • a sore throat
  • a headache
  • difficulty sleeping
  • loss of appetite
  • diarrhoea or tummy pain
  • feeling sick and being sick

The symptoms are similar for children, but they can also get pain in their ear and appear less active. Find out more here.

Are there any side affects of getting the Flu jab?

Serious side effects of the injected flu vaccine are very rare.

You may have a mild fever and aching muscles for a couple of days after having the vaccine, and your arm may be a bit sore where you were injected.

Side effects of the nasal spray vaccine may commonly include a runny or blocked nose, a headache, tiredness and some loss of appetite. Find out more here.

Will I have to get another vaccination again next year?

Yes. Each year, the viruses that are most likely to cause flu are identified in advance and the World Health Organization (WHO) recommends which type of flu virus strains to include in the vaccine.

The best time to have a flu vaccine is in the autumn, from the beginning of October to the end of November. But do not worry if you have missed it, as you can have the vaccine later in winter, just ask your GP for advice.

If you care for an elderly relative, you may wish to arrange for both yourself and your loved one to be vaccinated. Get in touch with your GP and be sure to visit the NHS website for more information.
