Activities Offered at Wessex Care Homes & Centres
For us, keeping all our residents socially busy and wherever possible, active, is so important. We have an overall Welfare and Engagement Lead, Malcolm Burgin who spends a lot of time putting together a busy schedule of activities and we also have dedicated Welfare Assistant at each of our care homes who puts together a programme of activities in each home based on the needs of the individual residents which are not only fun, but also provide vitally important mental, physical and social stimulation.
Dedicated social areas
We have areas in each home specially designed for social clubs or activity spaces, to maximise the potential for residents to be out and enjoying themselves like chair yoga, arts and crafts, poetry writing an even live music performances in the garden. We also make sure that those who might not be able to make their own way to them, have help to get out of their rooms comfortably to attend, so no-one feels left out.
Getting out into the community
Before the pandemic, we would usually organise regular outings to the cinema, to Wilton shopping village, the Salisbury Playhouse and the City Hall, and in the summer further afield to the beach, local farms and aquariums. This is something we hope to be able to reintroduce when it is safe to do so.
Workshop visits
We work with the ‘Alive’ charity that runs a variety of workshops in our homes involving music and dance therapy. Their programme includes circle dancing, such as movement with objects that stimulate the senses, as well as more traditional activities such as chair exercises.
Animal interactions
The Creature Teachers are another organisation we work with who bring animals to the community and to our care homes, they bring our residents so much joy and we love exposing our residents to pet therapy for those.
Building technology skills
We want to help build our residents’ confidence with technology and we offer the use of tablets so they can stay in contact with loved ones, which we recognise is incredibly important.
These are just a peek into the activities we offer (restrictions and guidance allowing).
